First Day Night Hike

Come celebrate the first day of 2024 with us!

First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks to encourage people to get outdoors. On New Year’s Day, hundreds of free, guided hikes will be organized in all 50 states. Kids and adults all across America will be participating in First Day Hikes, getting their hearts pumping and enjoying the beauty of a state park.  Last year nearly 55,000 people rang in the New Year, collectively hiking over 133,000 miles throughout the country! Our You and Me program is held once a month year-round, with Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday sessions available to choose from. Classes run 10:00-11:00 am or 11:15 am -12:15 pm. Ages 3-5. Cost is $12/child with one adult free. Registration includes refuge admission for child and parent.

We will read, do a craft and head out and about on an adventure about the month’s theme. Space is limited to 12 children.  Advanced registration required. *Please note: classes are held outdoors. Please dress for the weather.

  • Due to the demand for our classes and numerous last minute cancellations. We require that payment be made at the time of registration. We will be unable to provide refunds or credits for changes in schedules/personal conflicts or other personal reasons. However, in the event of a class cancellation due to inclement weather we will offer all registrants a credit towards the next month’s class or a fee refund.
  • These classes are “adult and me” so an adult is required to stay with the student. Younger siblings who are not enrolled in our program are welcome, but please make sure that they are not being disruptive to the other children. Experience the refuge in an exciting way, at night! Enjoy a guided hike under the darkness of the new moon to visit nocturnal habitats that are home to owls, raccoons, opossums and other wildlife that emerge after dark. Be there as the ‘night shift’ awakens. Program begins at the Nature Center. Hike is approximately 1 mile. 5:00-6:30pm. ADULTS ONLY! $15/person. 20 participants maximum. Advanced registration required.

Science Rocks! Mini Day-Off
Jan 15 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Day off? Get hands-on at Cedar Run! Join us for exciting science experiments, hikes, animal encounters and more!

K-5th grade. Space is limited to 20 children per group. Children should dress for the weather and plan on spending the entire time outdoors. $35/non-member, $30/member. Advanced registration required.

Full Moon Owl Prowl
Jan 26 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

Winter is often the best time of the year to locate owls in the forest as they are in the midst of nesting season. Program begins at the Outdoor Pavilion (with heaters!) for an up-close experience with our resident owls followed by a hike on the trail in search of our local species. Please dress accordingly and wear comfortable shoes. No flashlights, please. 5:00-6:30pm. Suitable for ages 8 and up. $15/adult, $10/child. Advanced registration required. This program will fill up!

Sustainability Exhibit

Visit us in our Exhibit Room this month to learn all about sustainability. What does it mean to be sustainable? How can you be more sustainable in your daily life? AND we will have some special guests visiting us this month to talk about sustainable practices.

-Sunday, February 18th at 10:30. Catie and Ian from Garden State Compost will have a table in our Nature Center.

-Sunday, February 25th from 10am-12pm. Tina Solak from the Refill Market will have a table in our Nature Center.

Come on out and learn with us! Exhibit is free with admission. Open 10am-4pm daily.

Wildlife Baby Shower @ Medford United Methodist Church
