124th Christmas Bird Count – Count Birds with Us!
Dec 17 all-day

Please join us on Sunday, 12/17/2023 for the Christmas Bird Count! This will be Audubon’s 124th Christmas Bird Count, where all across the world, people gather to count birds! This count data will then go towards conservation efforts to help the wildlife in your area!

All birding levels are welcome! Please bring your friends and family to come together as a team, or come by yourself!

Self-guided – Participants will be given a quick intro when they arrive and then sent on the trails to count on their own. Tally sheets will be available 10am-4pm and we will have loaner binoculars to borrow.

Prefer to have guide? New for 2024, join us on a guided hike at 7am, 11am or 1pm. Hike lasts approximately 1-hour. 15 participants maximum. No pre-registration needed – first come, first served.

Please wear appropriate clothing, as this date cannot be changed in coordination with Audubon’s guidelines. If you have any questions or concerns, please email [email protected].

This event is free with admission, but donations to support our work are always welcome!

Winter Solstice Lunch & Learn

To celebrate the Winter Solstice, we’ll have a fun visit with one of our resident ambassadors! Grab your lunch and come on over to hang out with a mystery feathered, scaly or furry friend. Questions welcome! 12:00pm. Suitable for all ages. This is a free program included with daily admission or membership, but donations to support our work are always welcome!  Advanced registration required. This event will take place INSIDE our Community Room so space is limited. Those not pre-registered will be on a first come, first served basis.

Winter Solstice Night Hike

SPACE IS LIMITED!

Come join us in celebrating the Winter Solstice here at Cedar Run. The shortest day and longest night of the year hold many traditions in anticipation of the sun’s return. Celebrate with us by enjoying a campfire with marshmallow roasting and a hike along our trails under the moon light. A refuge resident will make an appearance too! Ages 8 and up please. $15/adult, $10/child.

First Day Night Hike

Come celebrate the first day of 2024 with us!

First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks to encourage people to get outdoors. On New Year’s Day, hundreds of free, guided hikes will be organized in all 50 states. Kids and adults all across America will be participating in First Day Hikes, getting their hearts pumping and enjoying the beauty of a state park.  Last year nearly 55,000 people rang in the New Year, collectively hiking over 133,000 miles throughout the country! ADULTS ONLY! Night Hike
Jan 13 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

Experience the refuge in an exciting way, at night! Enjoy a guided hike under the darkness of the new moon to visit nocturnal habitats that are home to owls, raccoons, opossums and other wildlife that emerge after dark. Be there as the ‘night shift’ awakens. Program begins at the Nature Center. Hike is approximately 1 mile. 5:00-6:30pm. ADULTS ONLY! $15/person. 20 participants maximum. Advanced registration required.

Science Rocks! Mini Day-Off
Jan 15 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Day off? Get hands-on at Cedar Run! Join us for exciting science experiments, hikes, animal encounters and more!

K-5th grade. Space is limited to 20 children per group. Children should dress for the weather and plan on spending the entire time outdoors. $35/non-member, $30/member. Advanced registration required.

Full Moon Owl Prowl
Jan 26 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

Winter is often the best time of the year to locate owls in the forest as they are in the midst of nesting season. Program begins at the Outdoor Pavilion (with heaters!) for an up-close experience with our resident owls followed by a hike on the trail in search of our local species. Please dress accordingly and wear comfortable shoes. No flashlights, please. 5:00-6:30pm. Suitable for ages 8 and up. $15/adult, $10/child. Advanced registration required. This program will fill up!

Sustainability Exhibit
Feb 1 @ 10:00 am – Feb 29 @ 4:00 pm

Visit us in our Exhibit Room this month to learn all about sustainability. What does it mean to be sustainable? How can you be more sustainable in your daily life? AND we will have some special guests visiting us this month to talk about sustainable practices.

Join us:

-Sunday, February 18th at 10:30. Catie and Ian from Garden State Compost will have a table in our Nature Center.

-Sunday, February 25th from 10am-12pm. Tina Solak from the Refill Market will have a table in our Nature Center.

Come on out and learn with us! Exhibit is free with admission. Open 10am-4pm daily.
