Science Rocks! Afternoon: World Wildlife Day
Mar 3 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

In celebration of World Wildlife Day we’ll delve into all things wildlife with hands-on fun and experiments. Children should dress for the weather and plan on spending the afternoon entirely outdoors. 4:00-6:00pm. Grades K-8th. Students will be broken up to two groups – K-3rd and 4th-8th grade. $20/non-member, $15/member. Space is limited to 15 children per group. Advanced registration required.

Our You and Me program is held once a month year-round, with Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday sessions available to choose from. Classes run 10:00-11:00 am or 11:15 am -12:15 pm. Ages 3-5. Cost is $10/child with one adult free. Registration includes refuge admission for child and parent. Extra adults must pay regular admission.

We will read, do a craft and head out and about on an adventure about the month’s theme. Space is limited to 12 children.  Advanced registration required. *Please note: classes are held outdoors. Please dress for the weather.

We will be unable to provide refunds or credits for changes in schedules/personal conflicts or other personal reasons. However, in the event of a class cancellation due to inclement weather we will offer all registrants a credit towards the next month’s class or a fee refund.
  • These classes are “adult and me” so an adult is required to stay with the student. Younger siblings who are not enrolled in our program are welcome, but please make sure that they are not being disruptive to the other children. If we find a younger sibling is being disruptive to the class, we may ask you to excuse yourself from our program.
  • Classes will be held outdoors. Only snow closings of the Medford Twp School District will cancel our classes. Please be sure your child is adequately prepared for weather conditions including rain, snow, sun, cold, and heat.

Nature Journaling Kids’ Club

Give your child a break from screen time and encourage a connectedness to nature by providing the skill of nature journaling! This journal is not only a record of observations in their natural surroundings, but one that has value in the process as well. It encourages your child to increase their mindfulness of their natural habitat and pay attention to detail. The goal is to increase an appreciation of nature’s beauty, improve recognition of different species, and have an understanding of their local flora and fauna. Classes will run once monthly, and participants are encouraged to come as often as they can. Nature is always changing! 10:00-11:30 am. Suitable for ages 8-12*. $15/child. Fee includes daily Refuge admission for the participant only. Add on a Cedar Run journal for an additional $10 (retails for $15). Advanced registration required. Nature Journaling and Field Sketching

Whether you’re looking for a creative spark for your artistic expression, a way to develop your observational skills, or an immersive and mindful journey through nature, this course will guide you with friendly art instruction and engaging practice sessions that will help you make the most out of your journaling. Joining an in-person nature journaling group can be an amazing experience. Sitting in nature with others and exploring the world brings community, connection and mutual support. Classes will run once monthly, and participants are encouraged to come as often as they can. Nature is always changing! 1:00-2:30pm. Ages 13 and up*. $20/person. Junior Owl Prowl

Come out for an Junior Owl Prowl focused on our youngest owl enthusiasts! This program is geared toward children pre-K through 2nd grade (with an adult), but older siblings are welcome to join too. Program begins with an up-close experience with our resident owls followed by a hike on the trail in search of our local species. Please dress for the weather as the program is largely outside. 5:30-7:00pm. $10/person, ages 3 and under free. Advanced registration required. This program will fill up!

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work in a Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital? Are you curious about what goes into the process of rehabilitating injured and/or orphaned wild animals? Now is your chance to go behind the scenes and find out! Join one of our state-licensed wildlife rehabilitators for brunch (bagels, doughnuts, coffee, and tea) followed by an in-depth discussion and tour of our Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital and outdoor rehabilitation enclosures. These facilities are not open to the general public – this is a rare opportunity to tour them with a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Pricing is $50 per person. This experience is geared for ages 15 and up only. Face masks are required for the duration of the program inside our Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital.

FULL! – Citizen Science: Water Quality

As part of a long-term citizen science project, Cedar Run aims to observe the quality and life of one of its most prominent features, Cedar Run Lake. What is Citizen Science? During this project, we will collect physical and chemical samples to determine the biological health and sustainability. This sampling will be done by means of collecting water in specimen cups and performing field tests, and will later entail a macroinvertebrate collection! On March 18th we will be collecting our preliminary data which will only include the lake. 

This event is geared for adults and teens. $15/person. Pricing includes Refuge admission. Advanced registration required.

FULL! – Bluebirds of Spring (Members Only)

Eager for spring? Bluebirds will be returning to our area soon, but in some areas they may have trouble finding homes. Learn about how to help bluebirds and build a nest box to take home. Prior to building, our Educators will discuss information regarding the natural history and habitat needs of the Eastern Bluebird. Information and tips needed for installing and maintaining a successful bluebird nest box to encourage bluebirds to your property will also be covered.

1:00-2:30pm. Recommended for ages 5 and up. Box kits are $35 each (for up to 4 participants). Space is limited to 10 families. Advanced registration is required.

Want to learn more? Add a 30-minute additional hike to explore Cedar Run’s Bluebird box trail afterwards! $10/family.
