Refuge Mornings: Refuge Ramblers

Have a spare hour on Thursday OR Friday mornings? Get out of the house and join us for a lesson and hike! We’ll be running small group programs from 10-11am. We’ll be featuring a range of natural topics and maybe an animal or two! Topics will vary per week. Ages 6-12. $8/child. Space is limited to 12 children. Face masks are required when social distancing isn’t possible. Temperature check and health screening at check-in. Advanced registration required.

Join us for a morning of photography. Our trained staff will bring select birds out of their enclosures for photographing up-close and personal on perches and in a natural setting. This program will be limited to 12 participants. Masks required when social distancing isn’t possible. Temperature check and health screening at check-in. 9-11am. $50/member, $60/nonmember. Full Moon Night Hike

Experience the refuge in an exciting way, at night! Enjoy a guided hike at night to visit nocturnal habitats that are home to owls, raccoons, opossums and other wildlife that emerge after dark. Be there as the ‘night shift’ awakens. Program begins at the Nature Center. Hike is approximately 1 mile. $10/person. Suitable for ages 8 and up. Advanced registration required.

Check out “Snack Time Stories” virtually each Tuesday at 10am. Cedar Run’s educators will share one of our favorite nature books with you, show you a fun (and tasty) snack to try and give you ideas for an easy craft or activity to do at home! Get the kids unplugged and outdoors this spring! Take a break from virtual learning and delve into real world learning on Cedar Run’s 171 acres.

  • Small group sizes – 10-12 children per group, dependent on age. Masks required when social distancing isn’t possible. Temperature check and health screening at check-in.
  • Two days to choose from – Choose from a Wednesday OR Thursday afternoon session (same topic runs each day so please only choose one).
  • Two hours of Nature’s classroom time – 1:30-3:30 pm
  • Two age groups – K-1st and 2nd-5th. In the event of small groups sizes, groups may combine.
  • Sign-up for the whole month and save! Single session: $12/member, $15/non-member; 4 session discount: $40/member, $55/non-member.

Events scheduled for Friday, April 2nd

  • Ongoing, 10am-4pm: Trivia Scavenger Hunt – How well do you know Cedar Run? Come try our Trivia Scavenger Hunt! Get a question sheet from the front desk and search Cedar Run for the answers. Come back with all the right answers and win a prize!
  • 11am, 1pm OR 3pm: Resident Meet and Greet – Get up-close and personal with some mystery resident animals. Questions and photos welcome!
  • 11am OR 1pm: Survival Shelters – Try your hand at building a rustic shelter in the pines! And guess what? The wood is already gathered for you!
  • 12pm OR 2pm: Pond Dipping – Delve into the world of macro-invertebrates with us! Macros are insect larvae and nymphs, snails and aquatic insects that that live in the water and are able to be seen by the naked eye. What kind of things are living in Cedar Run lake? Stop by and check out what we’ve collected and try your hand at finding some creatures of your own!
  • Ongoing, 4-7pm: Canoeing* – Don’t miss this limited experience to paddle on Cedar Run Lake! 20-minute timeslots will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • 6-7:30pm: Campfire – Enjoy a quiet evening by the campfire. Marshmallows included!
  • 7-8:30pm: Night Hike* – Experience the Refuge in an exciting way, at night! Enjoy a guided hike under the light of the moon to visit nocturnal habitats that are home to owls, raccoons, opossums and other wildlife that emerge after dark.

While you are signed up for the day’s events, some sessions have limited capacities so be sure to check your email for information after you complete your registration. FREE WITH ADMISSION!

  • Participate during refuge hours: 7 days, 10:00am–4:00pm (including Easter Sunday)
  • Families with children ages 3–17 may take part in the FREE community competition.
  • Each child can electronically submit one digital image taken during their visit to Cedar Run, during the dates above only, to be eligible for a prize.
  • ALL participants will receive a matted 8 × 10 print of their submission and ALL the photographs will be displayed at Cedar Run during our gallery weekend May 1-2, 2021.
  • Winners will be chosen with a first, second and third place winner for best photograph in each age category (3–7 • 8–12 • 13–17) and in overall Animal and Landscape categories.
  • There will be no admission charge for participants during the gallery weekend. Prizes can be picked up during the gallery, but prints will be displayed all month long. They can be picked up starting June 1 and up to 60 days afterwards.
  • Prizes include t-shirts, symbolic wildlife adoptions, Cedar Run memberships, admission to kids photography workshops and more.

Events scheduled for Saturday, April 3rd

  • Ongoing, 10am-4pm: Nature Art – Create some beautiful, simple land art using natural materials! Use all natural objects such as pebbles, twigs, branches, pine cones, mud, leaves and petals. Photograph your sculpture and “tag” us on Facebook or Instagram for a chance to win a prize! Self-guided.
  • 10am OR 11am: Raptor Rendezvous* – Ever wonder what it is like to care for our resident raptors? What do they eat? How do we keep them from getting bored? Join us for a rare glimpse into the world of raptor feeding, care, and enrichment during this exciting and engaging program.
  • 11am OR 12pm: Reptile Encounter – Get up-close and personal with some our resident reptiles!
  • 12:30pm: Tree ID – Learn about and identify numerous plants in the Pinelands. One of our educators will lead you on a guided walk along our trails as we practice basic identification skills using leaves, bark and berries.
  • Ongoing, 1-3pm: Natural Egg Dyeing – while supplies last
  • 1pm: Herp Trek – Love reptiles and amphibians?! We do too! Set out on the grounds in search of these oft elusive critters.
  • 2pm: GPS Treasure Hunt – Treasure hunt anyone? No need to break out a map, instead try your hand at using a GPS to find some treasure boxes!
  • 3pm: Resident Meet and Greet – Get up-close and personal with some mystery resident animals. Questions and photos welcome!
