Walks on the Wild Side

On the third Sunday of every month, join our naturalist in search of the wild. Meet at 1:30 p.m. at the Nature Center. Included with the price of admission. Suitable for all ages.

 

February 17th: Predator Adaptations-Predators have many specialized traits that make them excellent hunters. From super hearing to super sight, we’ll explore some of these adaptations with the help of some of our resident animals.

March 17^th: Eyes to the Sky-The sky holds many fascinating parts of nature. We’ll check out birds, learn to identify the clouds, and maybe spot an early insect as we venture the trails of Cedar Run.

April 21^st: Plants and Plant Presses-Ever want to save the early spring blooms from your garden? Join our naturalist to discover some of our native plants and learn how to make a simple plant press you can carry with you.

May 19^th: Wonderful Wetlands-The wetlands are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. We’ll take a trip into our wetlands to investigate some of the more unique residents of the area.

June 16^th: Navigating the Pines-Leave your GPS behind! We’ll explore different ways to navigate without having to use modern technology.

July 21^st: Lions, Tigers, and Dragons of the Pines-Did you know we have lions, tigers, and dragons in the pines? They are all types of insects found along the trails of Cedar Run. We’ll go on a hunt for these fascinating insects and more.

 

Night Hikes

On the second Saturday night of August, October, February,  and May, a naturalist will help you explore the Refuge during twilight hours. Pre-registration is required. $10.00 per adult and $5.00 per child.

February 9th, 5:30-7:30 pm: Twilight Owl Hike-This time of year the owls can be heard hooting in the wood.  We’ll head out during the twilight hours to visit some of the owls that make the refuge their home. Please dress for the weather.   HIKE FULL!

 

May 11th, 7:00-9:00 pm: Sounds of the Night-Ever wonder what is making those unusual sounds out your window at night? We’ll explore the trails after dark and discover what call is coming from where.
