When food is scarce during the winter months, many animals have to search for their dinner. Come join us and make some edible crafts for the birds.
January 15th: Nature's structures
Beavers build dams and birds build nests. Join our naturalist and explore the variety of structures found in nature and discover how they work the way they do. After you see how the animals do it you can try your hand at buildling your own and see if it holds up well as the animals' structures do.
February 19th: Reusing Recyclables
What do milk cartons, plastic bottles and glass jars have in common? They all can be used to help us learn about our impact on the environment. Join our naturalist and discover different ways to reuse and repurpose some of our everyday household items.
March 18th: Unusual Navigation
Many of us are familiar with GPS and its uses, but how do animals find their way around? Join our naturalist and experience different kinds of navigation used by animals and people.
April 15th: Spring Up-Close
Ever take a really close look at an insect wing or a leaf just starting to emerge? We'll take out some of our mini microscopes and take a close look at the new growths and other exciting things we can find along the trail.
May 20th: Herp Habitats
Turtles, snakes and frogs are just a few of the reptiles found in the Pines. We'll take a look at the different habitats on the Refuge that our herpetile friends call home.
June 17th: Butterflies & Other Bugs
As we approach summer, a lot of our insect residents are out in number. The colorful butterflies, buzzing bees and fast flying dragonflies can be found all around. We'll take a hike along the Refuge trails and explore the diversity of the insects in the Pines.
Night Hikes
On the second Saturday night of August, October, February, and May, a naturalist will help you explore the Refuge during twilight hours. Preregistration is required. $10.00 per adult and $5.00 per child.
February 11th, 6:00-8:00 pm: Owls and the Winter Sky
Winter is a great time to observe the stars and keep an ear out for nesting owls. Hike the trails with our naturalist to find out who and what is out there in the winter months.
May 12th, 8:00-10:00 pm: Buggy Adventure
As the sun sets, we'll take a hike through the woods in search of the wide variety of insects that make their home at the Refuge. With the help of some special lights, we might be able to attract some of the more unusual nocturnal insects.
